Match Report - 29 Aug 2009, Swale United Football Club First XI lost to Greenways FC

Swale exit cup in the first round against Division 1 side Greenways here in the heat at Fleet Leisure in Northfleet.

The game started brightly for the away team who could of been 1-0 up on 18mins had it not been for a smart save from the Greenways goalkeeper from Ashley Baverstock. The game was very even in the first 45mins with both teams having chances to take the lead. Luke Titshall was the less busier of the two goalkeepers only having to field long range efforts, however at the other end the Greenways goalkeeper made two fine saves again from Ashley Baverstock and debutant Danny Grant.

The teams went in at half time 0-0 and with the game finally balanced all the away supporters were looking for a reaction from the sittingbourne side. As the game re-started it was Greenways who were back into their stride quickest and they took the lead on 53mins following some fine work from their lively strikers. This seem to engage the Swale side who then pushed for the equaliser. Again the home team goalkeeper made two superb saves from the lively Danny Grant however he was beaten by Danny G on 64mins following a great run and shot.

The game was end to end with Swale having the lionshare of possesion, however with the match destined for extra time the away side appeared to switch off from a corner on 90mins. A cross from the right was not dealt with by the away defence which allowed the Greenways striker to not only win the header but also volley the ball home from his own header. Despite this goal the away side did not look beaten and only the cross bar saved Greenways from extra time.

After this defeat in their first competitive cup game we grabbed an upbeat First Team Manager Kevin Hake:

"Yes I am disappointed to lose, but as I have told the lads this team are a Division higher and have some very good players indeed and I feel sure they will be challenging for their own league. Whilst the result did not go for us today I was very impressed with our forward played and with the lively Danny Grant we possess a potential match winner."

"Kevin and I now have some very big decisions to make in order to finalise the squad for our first league match away against Pembury on Saturday but I am safe in the knowledge whoever we pick they will produce the goods for the team."

Thanks Kevin, just a reminder to all that the first league game of the 2009/10 league campaign kicks off Saturday 5 September 14.45 at Pembury FC's Woodside Playing Fields.
